Greeley said he thinks he’s tracked down the family in the congregation that donated the new cross, but he said they didn’t do it for any accolades and declined to identify them publicly. It’s just a bit smaller than the old cross, he said, and it appears to be hand-made, with etchings covering its surface. “The cross being broken right at the beginning of Lent let us know we are broken,” Greeley said.įor about two weeks, the shattered pieces remained outside.īut on the morning of Friday, March 17, the church staff arrived to find a new cross in their parking lot.Īccording to Greeley, it came with a note that read, “We were disturbed about the cross being broken, so here’s a new one.” The message, Greeley explained, coincided with the Christian season of Lent during which parishioners fast, pray and look inward in preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter. “Most of them that talked to me really liked what the note said, what the sign said, because it called them to a renewal and repentance,” Greeley said.
